ENGAGEMENT TYPE: Part-time / Consultancy
ESTIMATED COMMITMENT: Approximately 1–2 days per fortnight
REPORTING TO: Construction / Site Management Team
LOCATION: Multiple sites across Kent, Surrey and East Sussex
Role Overview:
We are seeking a competent and experienced Appointed Person (AP) to support our construction and infrastructure projects on a rotational basis. This is not a full-time role, but a specialist function focused on reviewing, maintaining and updating lifting plans across multiple live sites.
The majority of lifting operations are routine excavator-based lifts, forming approximately 90% of lifting activities. While these lifts are generally straightforward, the role requires sound judgement, a strong understanding of excavator lifting capacities, and the ability to assess site-specific constraints and conditions.
The successful individual will act as the single Appointed Person across all sites, ensuring consistency, compliance and best practice in lifting operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- · Act as the Appointed Person in accordance with LOLER and BS 7121
- · Review existing lifting plans across all sites and amend where required
- · Produce and update lifting plans for routine excavator lifting operations
- · Ensure lifting plans are suitable, sufficient and reflective of:
- o Excavator lifting capacities
- o Ground conditions and site constraints
- o Load characteristics and lift frequency
- · Carry out periodic site visits (typically 1–2 times per fortnight) to:
- o Review lifting operations
- o Confirm lifting plans remain valid
- o Address changes in site conditions or methodology
- · Liaise with Site Managers, Supervisors and Operators to ensure:
- o Lifting plans are understood and followed
- o Any changes to lifting arrangements are properly assessed
- · Provide professional advice on lifting-related matters as required
- · Maintain clear and auditable documentation for lifting operations
Site Locations:
The role will cover 9 sites, with the expectation of visiting 3 - 4 sites per day where practicable across Kent, Surrey and Sussex
Skills, Experience & Competence
Essential:
- · Recognised Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) qualification
- · Strong working knowledge of LOLER, PUWER and BS 7121
- · Proven experience preparing and reviewing lifting plans
- · Solid understanding of excavator lifting duties and capacity charts
- · Ability to assess ground conditions and site-specific lifting risks
- · Competent in managing routine, repetitive lifting operations
- · Ability to work independently across multiple sites
- · Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
Desirable:
- · Experience working across multiple live construction sites
- · Background in civil engineering, groundworks or enabling works
- · Familiarity with environmental or infrastructure projects
Working Arrangements & Commercial Terms:
- · Estimated 1–2 days per fortnight, subject to project needs and changes
- · Flexible working pattern agreed in advance
- · Travel between sites required; mileage/travel arrangements to be agreed
- · Role offered on a day-rate or consultancy basis, subject to agreement
Suitability of the Role:
This role would suit an experienced Appointed Person seeking:
- · A flexible, part-time or consultancy position
- · Low-complexity but responsibility-driven lifting operations
- · A consistent portfolio of sites rather than ad-hoc appointments
